My Story
I have always loved music. I grew up listening to bands like Ramones, The Clash, Jim Carroll, Lou Reed, the whole punk and new wave scene. I will never forget, when I was 15, listening to The Clash's "London Calling" album and thinking "WOW! I would love to be able to play guitar like that!" After I told my brother, Dann, I wanted to play guitar, he gave me his old Tesco Del Ray to start learning on. Believe me, this was no ***** After a few weeks, the cords started coming to me naturally, the only problem was that the guitar sounded terrible! I put new pickups in it, a new bridge, keys, everything. It still wasn't what I was looking for. I later introduced it to a router, killing the only guitar I had. I didn't have enough money to go buy another guitar so this left me with two choices; give up on playing the guitar or make my own. I loved playing too much just to quit, so I went to the hardware store, bought some wood and started hacking away. My first guitar turned out to be the ugliest purple guitar that sounded great as long as open cords were being played. As I played up the neck, I swear I could hear that old Tesco Del Ray laughing at me. Still with no money, I decided to try again. My second attempt was much more fruitful. I made a solid body guitar and neck from a slab of maple, painted it Pontiac Sunbird Blue, slapped some DiMarzio pickups in it with a white pick guard. This was the guitar I had always wanted, the look, the weight, and most importantly, the sound. I would have saved money in the long run if I had just gone out and bought a tele but I knew there was no other guitar in the world like this one. Several of my friends played this guitar and said "Hey, this is a cool guitar! Would you make me one?" I said "Sure!"
Every MDX custom guitar is a one of a kind. They are all made by hand and every step has input from the musician I am making the guitar for. There are no limits! If there were limits, then it truly wouldn't be custom. Everything from the kind of wood it is made from to the size of the frets is all up to you. When it leaves my shop, it will even be set up for the strings of your choice! I am an artist by heart and I love a challenge! Thank you for your interest in me and my guitars.
Sincerely, Dwight Maddox
